Es'kia Mphahlele (1919 – 2008) is one of the most distinguished writers to have come from South Africa. He fell in love with the world of creative writing from a very young age and made his debut by publishing Man Must live. (short stories) His first autobiography Down second Avenue is regarded as an African classic, alter to be followed by another autobiographical work, Afrika, My Music.
An academic, thinker, philosopher, “African humanist” and critic, Es’kia published fine works of fiction like the award-winning The Wanderers, and Chirundu. Remarkably he was once short-listed for the Nobel Award in literature and garnered many major awards during his lifetime. His legacy is very much intact.
