Oyono, a Cameroonian, published his remarkable, early novels in French, and they were later translated into English to cater for a wider readership. The author delineates life in the old francophone colonies with a combination of great wit, satire, and pathos.
Houseboy - Un ville de boy in the original French text - is Oyono's best known novel where he tells the story of naive protagonist, Toundi who is fascinated with the white "masters" and meets a tragic end ultimately. Other books published by Oyono include Le Vieux Nègre et la médaille (1956; translated as The old man and the Medal in 1969) and Chemin d'Europe.
