WOLE SOYINKA

Africa’s first Nobel Laureate in Literature, Wole Soyinka enjoys a status that is consonant with his theatrical image. Known mainly for his superb plays, he is actually a very versatile writer; a novelist, poet, essayist, literary critic, film-maker among other things. A prolific playwright, his celebrated drams include Kongi’s Harvest, The Bacchae of Euripides, Camwood on the  leaves, Madmen and Specialists, Opera Wonyosi, etc
Born in 1934, Soyinka began to show his great fecund talent for writing at a young age. By his mid thirties he had written a number of excellent plays, including The Lion and the jewel and The strong Breed. In the late 60's Soyinka was imprisoned by the Nigerian authorities as the Civil war raged on. Even after winning the Nobel award Soyinka kept on being creative in fascinating fashion; culminating in his great memoir, You Must set forth at dawn.
