Kofi Awoonor was probably the first Ghanaian writer to garner international recognition for his writings. He was a contemporary of early African writers like Wole Soyinka, Lewis Nkosi, Ola Rotimi etc
Awoonor is respected for his polished poetry. His books of poetry include Rediscovery and other poems, Night of my blood, and The house by the sea. He also published the novels This earth my brother; and Comes the voyager at last
