Lewis Nkosi’s reputation as a fearless, nigh-peerless literary critic lingers one, even after his death (2011). Nkosi who was an all-round writer did what he could to nip any incipient complacency on the part of excellent African writers in the bud. His splendid literary essays still endure and have been collected in journals and anthologies.
Nkosi wrote remarkable fiction though, the most famous of which was Mating Birds which brilliantly explored black/white sexual relations during apartheid. Other novels of his were Mandela’s Ego, and Underground People.
